The May 7th march also celebrated legal actions that were filed in every state in the United States on May 7, 2011, requesting government leaders to recognize that the atmosphere is a public trust upon which everyone relies to protect our future.
The lawsuits asked courts to recognize the public trust character of the atmosphere. Here in Utah, we filed a request for rule making, which is a formal legal petition asking a state agency to take an action. We asked seven state agencies to begin developing a long-range plan to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. You can read our petition here. You can watch short videos about the youth plaintiffs in the law suits filed in other states here and you can learn more about the legal theory behind the lawsuits here.
